EU Applications to Irish Universities Triple since Brexit

Irish Universities witness significant rise in EU applications and enrolments post-Brexit

According to a Higher Education Authority report, EU student enrolments at Irish Universities have tripled since the UK left the European Union.

Prior to Brexit, EU students were granted the same tuition fees as were applicable for domestic students in the UK, but those terms ended due to Brexit in 2021. Undergraduate tuition fees in the UK for international students are £11,400–£38,000, which is now also applicable to EU students taking up courses at UK universities.

In Ireland, most undergraduate EU/EEA students enrolled in publicly funded third-level courses do not have to pay tuition fees. For non-EU students, tuition fees range from €9,850–€19,500, at an average of €14,675.

Irish universities have been attracting more international students than ever due to degree affordability, world-class facilities and a lower cost of living. The HEA also reports that the international student population in Ireland accounted for 12.4% of the overall numbers, which is higher than 10.3% in 2020/21.
