University College Cork has been named as one of the world’s most sustainable universities by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). UCC is the only Irish university to feature in the top ten list of the world’s greenest universities and it received a gold rating on the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), becoming the first third level institution outside the US and Canada to win this rating.
More than 700 higher education institutes in almost 81 countries of the world were rated by the UI GreenMetric World University 2018 Rankings across various parameters such as educational and research activities and operational performance. UCC was also the first university in the world to be awarded the Green Flag from the Foundation for Environmental Education in 2010.
UCC has attained excellence in sustainability through initiatives such as maintaining a green campus, a plastic free cafe at the University’s Biosciences Institute, university catering using farm fresh vegetables from university farms and local suppliers and cooked meals delivered in long life containers.
