Internationals Students Studying Remotely Eligible for Graduate Work Opportunities in Ireland

Published 08 March 2021

Ireland has extended post study work visa rules for international students who are studying remotely from their home country in response to the Covid-19 situation.

International graduates from non-EEA countries studying at a recognised Irish Higher Education Institution are eligible to remain in Ireland and apply for employment opportunities post study under the Third Level Graduate Programme.

As a special concession due to Covid-19, the government is now allowing international students studying remotely to remain in their home countries and apply for this scheme. This is a temporary concession given to international students studying in semester 2 meaning they can still apply for graduate work permit in the country and look for employment opportunities post completion of their course.

A spokesperson from The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science informed that “In order to minimise the number of students arriving in Ireland, and to protect public health, the Department of Justice reviewed the eligibility criteria for the third level graduate permission scheme (1G)”.

The students however need to meet all the existing and new criteria in order to remain eligible for Third Level Graduate Programme scheme. Eligibility criteria for students studying remotely includes completing their studies in summer 2021 and providing a letter from their institution stating that the course was provided 100% remotely and they were not required to be present in Ireland for the academic year 2020-21.

Douglas Proctor, director of UCD Global at University College Dublin, welcomed the decision stating, “As with other host countries for international students, many choose Ireland not only for the quality of the programs on offer and for the Irish cultural experience, but also for the opportunity to seek post-study employment. UCD receives excellent feedback on the opportunities that this opens up for Irish business and industry”.
